The sun is shining. The grass is turning green. The colorful flowers are starting to come out. And maybe most importantly the temperature is warming up.
Bbbbrrr Rabbit!!! It's cold. In fact in parts of the country it is the coldest it has been this season, thanks to the polar vortex! Also, its the beginning of a new show and rodeo season. The stock show season is in full swing. With that brings the challenge of preparing for competition in less than ideal conditions.
My journey goes through the middle of an arena. This journey touches every thing on, off, and around the horse. While in college my dad had three shoulder surgeries in 10 months on his ROPING shoulder! I grew up with a roping arena in my front yard, so had he not been able to back into the box again life at our house would have drastically changed. I watched him scrap and work with his physical therapist. He and his PT got him back in the arena. Watching that experience is what drove me to become a Physical Therapist.
It is no secret that healthcare costs are rising. It is definitely no secret that healthcare costs in America are the highest of the developed countries. Per capita, we spend more per person on healthcare than any other country in the world. Fear is a Liar. This has come up several times with clients over the past few months. It doesn't matter if you are staring down the alley at a fearful first barrel or standing at a horsemanship cone waiting for the nod. Fear is standing there at attention to lie to you. So let's break it down...
What are you afraid of? What fear is driving you? You need to stop and name that fear. Keep naming and naming it until the ugly truth is fully brought to light. Identify the fear and it's source. If you can put a full identity, you are ahead of the game.
Everything we do in our sport is surrounded by movement. We analyze how a horse stops, how a horse turns, on and on. Whether a horse stops on their front end or hind end determines how much power the horse has in that movement, how much the horse scores in that maneuver, or the longevity of their career. We analyze where a horse's foot fall pattern is throughout a turn. The list goes on and on. So with that being said our sport comes down to movement.
